El récord guinness de la colección de Sakura llega a Estados Unidos
¡Buena noticia, cardcaptors! El Guinness World Record oficializó el nuevo récord para la colección más grande de Cardcaptor Sakura en el mundo.
Matthew Emblidge (32) de Estados Unidos recibió este reconocimiento al certificar 4,873 piezas oficiales de la popular serie de CLAMP.
Este es el tercer récord obtenido desde el 2016, cuando Sofía Pichihua (Perú) alcanzó la mención con 1,086 items. Luego en mayo del 2019, la joven cosplayer Natsumi Shirahoshi (Japón) lo superó con 1,709 piezas.
La colección de Matt incluye una amplia variedad de revistas Nakayosi de Japón, donde se publica cada capítulo del manga de CCS y Clear Card, la secuela que aún sigue en serialización.
Además, tiene revistas, mangas, figuras coleccionables, stickers, polos y otras vestimentas, así como merchandising variado y juguetes de diferentes países incluyendo piezas de Japón y Estados Unidos. En el 2018, Matt viajó a Tokio para conseguir nuevas posesiones.

- ¿Por qué Cardcaptor Sakura es tan especial para ti?
Cardcaptor Sakura fue uno de los primeros animes que vi, pero también fue la primera vez que leí un manga. Fue mi puerta de entrada al manga en general. Incluso después de muchos años, sigue siendo una serie que considero perfecta. Es una gran serie de aventuras y coincidía con mis gustos. Siempre me gustó coleccionar cosas, y la historia de esta serie se relaciona justamente con coleccionar. También me gusta Pokémon, pero eso no está relacionado.
Además, Cardcaptor Sakura fue mi introducción al manga Shoujo de temas románticos. Vi Sailor Moon cuando era más joven, pero siempre tuve que ocultar eso. Era demasiado "femenino" para que le gustara a un chico. Cardcaptor Sakura también es para niñas, pero tal vez debido a las edades (tenía 10 años), se sentía más como una serie más equilibrada, y estaba bien que me gustara. Con el tiempo, estuve expuesto más al género Shoujo y llegué a sentirme más cómodo apreciando abiertamente este género. Todavía disfruto de la alta acción Shonen de My Hero Academia, pero aprecio y prefiero la profundidad emocional del Shoujo con cosas como Marmalade Boy. Cardcaptor Sakura me permitió sentirme cómodo con mis gustos.
Por último, Cardcaptor Sakura también es una serie que me encanta a nivel técnico. Tiene un diseño visual increíble que va más allá de muchas series. Los trajes de CLAMP, tanto en manga como en anime, son la parte más definitoria y especial, y es un nivel de creatividad del que carecen muchos otros animes. ¿Qué otra serie pone tanto esfuerzo en asegurarse de que los personajes casi nunca usen el mismo atuendo dos veces? - ¿Qué te inspiró a postular a los Guinness World Record?
No pensé en solicitar un récord hasta que Sofía lo hizo en 2016. Inmediatamente quise hacerlo porque ahora sabía que era posible. En ese momento, mi colección tenía aproximadamente el mismo tamaño que la de ella, pero quería hacer la mía mucho más grande antes de enviar la solicitud. Me concentré en coleccionar cosas que me gustaban, así que la colección creció. Luego, cuando fui a Japón en el 2018, para la Exposición de Sakura en Tokio vi el mensaje de Sofía en la exhibición. Entonces supe que quería el récord. Posiblemente también quería estar en una exposición. Entonces, finalmente me senté a averiguar cómo aplicar realmente. Pasaron dos años después de eso para hacerlo bien.
- ¿Qué fue lo más difícil que tuviste que lidiar?
El papeleo. Intenté enviar la solicitud una vez en 2019. Tenía 3,300 piezas en ese momento. Fue un gran desafío encontrar personas que estuvieran dispuestas a participar, incluso encontrar a alguien que pudiera ser un “experto”. Lo hizo, pero la solicitud no cumplió con los estándares adecuados. Luego, a Natsumi Shirahoshi se le entregó el récord (1,709 piezas) mientras yo todavía esperaba que se procesara mi trámite. He coleccionado mercadería de Cardcaptor Sakura desde 2001, cuando llegó a los Estados Unidos. Sé que es una opinión impopular, pero en realidad me gusta el doblaje de "Cardcaptors" de Nelvana y me encantaría conocer a algunos de los actores de doblaje estadounidenses.
Lo primero que compré fue el Libro Clow, que todavía tengo, aunque lamentablemente perdí una de las cartas. Coleccioné algunos items durante toda la escuela secundaria y la universidad, y mi primera vez en Japón en 2009.

- ¿Qué mensaje tiene para otros coleccionistas de CCS?
Siempre tenga en cuenta que es posible que algún día tenga que mover su colección. No abarates los gastos de mudanza o las cosas se romperán o perderán.
- ¿Tienes planes para tu colección?
Mi colección sigue creciendo. En realidad, ahora son más de 5000 piezas, pero tuve que enviarlas lo antes posible porque este es el aniversario número 25 y quería estar en los libros lo antes posible. Voy a seguir coleccionando cosas, pero ahora me centro en coleccionar juegos de cartas, lo cual es muy apropiado. Cardcaptor Sakura fan in US got Guinness World Record!
Matthew Emblidge is the new record holder for the Largest collection of Cardcaptor Sakura memorabilia, accredited by Guinness World Records.
His collection began as a child and now he possesses 4,873 official items.
Matt lives in Maryland, US, and he shared some photos of his collection at Twitter. In 2018, he travelled to Japan to get more items for his collection.

- Why is Cardcaptor Sakura so special to you?
Cardcaptor Sakura was one of my earliest Anime I watched, but it was also the first time I read the Manga. It was my gateway to manga in general. Even after many years, it is still a series I consider perfect. It is a great adventure series and it catered to my tastes. I always liked collecting things, and it is a series about collecting. I also like Pokemon but that is unrelated.
Also, Cardcaptor Sakura was my introduction to openly loving Shoujo manga. I watched Sailor Moon when I was younger, but I always had to hide that. It was too “girly” for a boy to like. Cardcaptor Sakura is also meant for girls, but maybe because of the ages (at the time I was 10), it felt more like a show that was more balanced, and it was ok for me to like. Over time, I was exposed to more Shoujo genre, and I came to be more comfortable openly appreciating the genre. I still enjoy the high action Shonen of My Hero Academia, but I appreciate and prefer the emotional depth of Shoujo with things like Marmalade Boy. Cardcaptor Sakura allowed me to be comfortable with my tastes.
Lastly, Cardcaptor Sakura is also a series I just love on a technical level. It has amazing visual design that goes above and beyond a lot of series. CLAMP’s costumes, both in the Manga and Anime, are the most defining and special part, and it’s a level of creativity a lot of other shows lack. What other series puts that much effort into making sure the characters almost never wear the same outfit twice? Moreover, the music is still excellent and varied, the voice cast was well cast, the animation quality and style have aged very well. Cardcaptor Sakura has a perfect mix of technical achievements that makes it a wonderful product even 25 years later.
- What inspired you to apply for the Guinness World Record?
I did not think about applying for a Record until Sofia Pichihua applied for hers in 2016. I immediately wanted to claim it, because now I knew it was possible. At that time, my collection was about the same size as Sofia’s, but I wanted to make mine much larger before submitting. But I forgot about the record over time, and I just focused on collecting things I liked, which was a lot of things, so the collection grew. Then when I went to Japan in 2018, for the Sakura Exhibition in Tokyo, I saw Sofia’s message included in the exhibition. I knew then that I wanted the record. I wanted to possibly be in an exhibition too. So, I finally sat down to figuring out how to actually apply. It took 2 years after that to get it right.
- What was the hardest thing you had to deal?
Doing the paperwork. I tried to submit once in 2019. I had 3300 pieces at the time. It was a big challenge finding people who were willing to participate, including finding someone who could be an “expert”. I submitted at the time, but the paperwork ended up not meeting the proper standards. Then Natsumi Shirahoshi was given the record (1709 pieces) while I was still waiting on my paperwork to process. And then my attempt was rejected anyway. It was disheartening. I had the real record, but I could not get the process right to prove it. And then I had to get ready to move to Maryland, so I had to abandon it.
For the second attempt, the challenges of 2020 and the pandemic became the hardest part of getting this done. Since we did the count around the holidays, we all had to be careful and wait for everyone to have quarantined and been healthy at the same time so we could finally do the counting in person. But this time I had volunteers ready to go.
- Which is the most special item you have? How many years have you collected CCS memorabilia?
I have collected Cardcaptor Sakura merchandise since 2001, when it came to the US. I know it is an unpopular opinion, but I actually like Nelvana’s “Cardcaptors” dub, and would love to meet some of the US voice cast. The first thing I ever bought was a Clow Book toy, which I still have, though I sadly lost a card in it. I collected little bits and pieces all through high school and college, and my first time going to Japan in 2009.
However, my collection really exploded in 2014 when I discovered all the Nakayoshi branded items associated with Sakura . I loved the artwork on them, so I bought everything that said “Nakayoshi”. I also started collecting the artbooks, and pins, and plushies, and it just got out of control a little bit.
I do not have a most special item. It’s hard to pick one. But perhaps the thing I am most proud of is my Rubber Charm Collection. Rubber charms are a new thing in the collecting world, and I really enjoy them. I have a small collection of ones that are not Cardcaptor Sakura related, but these are my absolute favorite thing to collect and display. They are also challenging because you can find knockoff ones on the market a lot. I have had to throw away many knock offs before finally getting whole sets of real ones.
- What message do you have to other CCS collectors?
Always keep in mind that you may have to move your collection someday. Do not cheap out on moving expenses or things will get broken or lost.
- Do you have plans for your collection?
My collection is still growing. It’s actually over 5000 pieces now, but I had to submit as soon as possible because this is the 25 year anniversary and I wanted to be on the books as soon as possible. I am going to continue collecting things, but my focus is now going to be on collecting card sets, which is very fitting. Over half my collection is just cards, so now I am on the hunt for certain older sets, and setting money aside for them, as they are rare and expensive.
