REVIEW: Cool Tokyo Guide

El libro "Cool Tokyo Guide" de Abby Denson es una bienvenida a la cultura japonesa desde Tokio.

Esta publicación de Tuttle Publishing es ideal para los aficionados al anime, manga, videojuegos y de las tradiciones niponas.

Así que si estás planeando un tour por la capital japonesa te contaré por qué podrías consultar este libro, publicado en marzo del 2018.

¿Qué diferencia "Cool Tokyo Guide" de otras guías de viaje?

Las guías de viaje que encuentres en las librerías o tiendas virtuales van a destacar la historia y cultura japonesa, en general. Este libro tiene una audiencia específica y se enfoca en un público juvenil.

Su autora, Abby Denson, es escritora de historietas y, por eso, plasmó la guía en un formato estilo cómic. Esta es una característica que lo diferencia de los clásicos libros. Está escrita en primera persona porque son recomendaciones de experiencias que podrían ocurrirte durante el viaje.

El índice incluye temas desde que decides viajar a Japón y quedarte en Tokio. Es un plan que puede aplicarse para viajes menores a diez días.

Los dibujos ayudan a entender temas complicados como las costumbres en Japón, los modales, la etiqueta y hasta los aparatos que encontrarás como los populares baños tecnológicos.

Mis capítulos favoritos del libro

Las secciones que más me gustaron de "Cool Tokyo Guide" están vinculadas a la cultura pop y la gastronomía. Lo mejor: cada capítulo cuenta con un glosario de términos en japonés y sus definiciones, así como frases más utilizadas que te ayudarán a sobrevivir sin conocimientos de este idioma.

Otro punto a favor es la lista de enlaces que puedes visitar para obtener mayor información. Los datos que se difunden estarán en inglés para que los puedas entender si no dominas el japonés.

Pero, al mismo tiempo, a esta ventaja le veo una debilidad: el papel, lo analógico, limita la navegación. En mi opinión, y ya que esta guía se enfoca a un público joven, se pudo haber incluido códigos QR para que los usuarios puedan ingresar a las páginas webs recomendadas sin tener que teclear las direcciones web.

No he revisado la edición para Kindle de este libro por lo que no estoy segura si esta situación cambia en la versión digital.

Creo que sería un éxito asegurado si lo publican en español también. En América Latina Tokyo Geek's Guide también está a la venta en español en librerías locales.

What is the key differentiator about "Cool Tokyo Guide"?


Usually, travel guides you'll find will highlight Japanese history and culture, in general. This book has a specific audience, focuses on a young audience.

Its author, Abby Denson, is a comic writer and, for that reason, she shaped the guide as a comic. This is the principal characteristic that differentiates this guide from classic books. It is written in first person because she shares experiences that could live anyone during the trip.

The book includes topics since the moment that you decide to travel to Japan and stay in Tokyo. It is a plan that can be applied for trips less than ten days.

The comic help to understand complicated subjects such as the manners, etiquette and even the devices that you will find, for example, technological bathrooms.


My favorite chapters of the book


The sections that I liked the most about "Cool Tokyo Guide" talks about pop culture and gastronomy. The best: each chapter has a glossary of terms in Japanese and their definitions, as well as japanese phrases that will help you to survive.

Another good tip is the list of links that you can visit for more information. The data  will be in English so that you can understand them if you do not master Japanese.

But, at the same time, I see a weakness: paper limits navigation. In my opinion, and since this guide focuses on a young audience, QR codes could have been included in order to help users so they can access the recommended web pages without typing the web addresses.

I have not reviewed the Kindle edition of this book so I'm not sure if this situation changes in the digital version.
